INAUGURAL 18ft SKIFF REGATTA
The Bias Marine 18ft Skiff Bramble Bay Championship
Easter weekend 2012
The Brisbane 18 Footers hit the road this Easter for a race series in Sandgate to coincide with the Bluewater Festival. The series begins with a race at 1pm on Good Friday (just after the start of the Brisbane to Gladstone) and two races from 11:30 on Saturday and Sunday. The boats will race out of the Sandgate Yacht Club with a course as close to the pier as physically possible.
There will be plenty of thrills and spills as up to 6 of these high tech, carbon fiber racing machines, known as the Formula 1 of sailing, take to the water. The Brisbane 18 Footers fully licensed spectator ferry will be available for anyone that would like to see the action up close. It’s a great day out with munchies and drinks available on board.
Tickets for the ferry will be available on brisbane18footers.com or on the ferry on the day.
Where: Sandgate Yacht Club
When: 6th – 8th April 2012
Ferry: Prices and times will be advertised on brisbane18footers.com
Background
The Brisbane 18 Footers club has existed for 117 years in different forms and spent many of those years racing on the Brisbane River. That was until the boats sprouted wings and began to fly.
The modern 18 Footer is 100% carbon fiber with the latest technology in sail materials and fittings. They regularly reach speed of 25 knots or more, and are often on the knife-edge of control. A small error from any one of the three crew members can end in a spectacular high-speed crash, making this class the most popular with spectators where ever they sail.
The Brisbane 18 Footers now race up to 6 boats off Manly each weekend with the spectator ferry joining them regularly. Most boats have corporate sponsors that keep them on the water; their logos blazoned across the hulls and huge sails making the 18s a spectacular site.
The Brisbane 18 Footers Sailing Club still has strong roots in its heritage and continue to race Historic 10 footers on the Bulimba stretch of the Brisbane River most Sundays. These beautiful timber boats are half the length of their modern counterparts, yet still take three crew members and enormous sail areas.
